Master of Music


Music Education

Music education combines the study of music, culture, places, and people.

Drawing from Concordia's outstanding music and education programs, our advanced degree in music education is ideal for passionate educators seeking effective methods to encourage and engage their students through music instruction, in whatever context you teach (elementary, general music, band, choir, orchestra, or private lessons). The program curriculum will introduce new instructional approaches and strategies, influencing a stronger connections with your students through music.

Earning a master's degree in music education is about more than career advancement; it's an opportunity to share your knowledge with students in new and exciting ways.

Program Details

Outcomes


Goal | Students will:

Strengthen the skill set and knowledge of practicing music teachers and prepare them for leadership positions in K-12 schools and/or for placement in a doctoral degree program leading to a career in higher education.

Outcomes | Students will:

Develop advanced competencies in music education philosophy and knowledge of how music education has evolved both in an historical sense and in K-12 schools.

Understand the research paradigms that are commonly used in music education and will know how to interpret music education studies.

Gain a deeper knowledge of music curriculum and express the multiple ways in which their curricular choices impact student learning.

Know the ways in which psychology impacts music teaching and learning. Students will have a thorough understanding of specific learning theories and the psychologists, educators, and researchers that have developed said theories.

Gain a deeper understanding of best practices in teaching in a variety of music classroom settings.

Strengthen their personal musicianship with opportunities to explore the historical, theoretical, and cultural foundations of music on a deeper level.

The Master of Music in Music Education is fully accredited by the Higher Learning Commission, a commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.
